Originally by: Manfred Doomhammer again, not a problem with being able to gank some hauler before concord can punish the agressors.... the problem though is that the agressor can have an alt (or a buddy, whatever) next to him, and this guy can loot the can of the victim (and if in the same corp as the agressor, his remains too)
so... you scan a ship, you see nice cargo that offsets the price of a medium fit raven (actually quite an overkill for a single hauler ... ) you bump it from the gate while your raven jockey blasts it to bits, and then gets blasted to atoms by concord.
now, all you need to do is have the buddy scoop up the loot and his buddies loot, while the original victim still has to travel back to station... ASUMING he even has a warship parked in system he got randomly ganked in, he still needs to go through docking and ship change lag before he can leave station to retaliate, while in the meantime the buddy of the agressor has cleaned up the scene under the watchful eye of concord
now, im sorry, but i fail to see the risk for the "pirates" there. maybe the only risk is being unlucky and all of the valuables getting destroyed when the victim blows up...
as i said previously, i dont want the ability to attack someone in high sec removed... but as long as concord hangs around there, looting the can of the victim would be commiting a crime right in front of police... and even if concord are taking money to look the other way sometimes, that would be a bit too obvious to cover up
This is much of what I was thinking on reading this thread. Too many people here are missing the point: The problem isn't that the hauler got blown up. There's the old adage about the difficulty in stopping the lone assassin willing to trade his life for the target's.
The problem is the looting afterward. Since everyone loves real-world analogies, consider this one: Someone pulls a grenade launcher out and blows up someone else's car right in front of a dozen cops. The guy with the grenade launcher is immediately shot by the cops. Ambulences show up to take the victim and the wounded perp away (just like pods warp away). The cops are not gonna stand around doing nothing while someone goes up and loots the wreckage of the car.
IMHO, if Concord sees someone looting something that isn't theirs, they should get Concordokken. It shouldn't trigger the Concord warp-in like killing someone in a belt, but if it happens right in front of them, there's no reason why they shouldn't act.
To sum up: The problem here isn't the hauler ganking, but the alt/buddy that showed up to loot the corpse.
